#UCCSynod: Welcome to Milwaukee!

My taxi driver and I  made a surprising connection this morning en route from the airport. His name was Mustafa and he talked while driving and smiling about all of the great sites to take in here in Milwaukee. We learned about the best cheese puffs, Harleys and the best brews. When I commented that his Middle Eastern accent was familiar to me, Mustafa said he came from Jordan originally. I’d recently returned from an interfaith trip through my church to visit voices of conscience in Palestine, Israel and Jordan. I gushed about the Jordanian hospitality and our memorable tour guide there named “Sami”.

Mustafa exclaimed he knew the man and mentioned his sister, also a resident of Milwaukee, was presently visiting Wadi Rum with our mutual guide.

In a small world way, Mustafa immediately FaceTimed his sister. At that very moment, she was riding in a Jeep through the red desert and we saw her beaming face flash on the screen.

May we who gather together as church this week experience those surprising small world moments that break down the arbitrary walls and call us together as friends.

See you on the convention floor!
