Purpose
 
The Director of Family Ministries is responsible for faith formation with the children, youth, and families in our congregation and community.  The purpose of this ministry is to provide opportunities for young people to experience the love of God, to learn about the Bible and about our faith, and to put faith into action through service and mission.
 
Responsibilities
 
Sunday Morning Church School

  • Working with the Pastor and the Family Ministry Team, develop program goals and strategies for their implementation.
  • Oversee the selection and/or creation of curriculum.
  • Oversee the recruitment, training, support, and growth of teachers, nursery staff, and other church school workers.
  • Communicate plans to teachers and provide resources/supplies for their activities.
  • Communicate with families and neighbors, inviting and encouraging participation and offering take-home materials and activities to connect what happens at church on Sunday with what happens elsewhere during the rest of the week.
  • Oversee administrative details of the program.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness on an ongoing basis, thinking strategically and creatively about how we can grow and improve.
 
Church Programs/Activities
  • Working with the Pastor, the Family Ministry Team, and other boards/committees, develop and oversee activities, events, seasonal programs, and other opportunities for family participation in church life.
  • Plan and facilitate worship services for Children’s Sunday and the Christmas Pageant, as well as other opportunities for young people to be involved in worship leadership.
  • Offer family faith formation and fellowship opportunities such as Advent Workshop, Family Fun Nights, Family Lenten Program, etc.
  • Develop opportunities to foster and showcase young people’s leadership in all aspects of congregational life.
  • Develop intergenerational connections within the congregation.
  • Communicate with the Pastor regarding spiritual and other needs among families to ensure a holistic response.
 
Community Programs/Activities
  • Working with the Pastor, the Family Ministry Team, and other boards/committees, develop and implement opportunities for children, youth, and families to be involved in mission/service beyond our church doors and to connect with the wider community.
  • Develop and implement creative faith formation and enrichment opportunities for young people, with parallel programming (or unstructured time) for parents.  This might include children’s yoga classes, music lessons, meditation/mindfulness practice, etc., as well as more curriculum-oriented units.
  • Connect with like-minded others (schools, teachers, guidance counselors, social service agencies, town government, etc.) to develop collaborative programs and respond to community needs.
  • Reach out broadly to the wider community to encourage participation, discern opportunities, and build collaborative relationships.
 
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Communicate regularly with the Pastor, the Family Ministry Team, other church staff, and other boards/committees regarding the development and implementation of programs.
  • Develop and implement the Family Ministry budget.
  • Hire and supervise Nursery Attendant(s).
  • Attend staff meetings and prepare communications for print and electronic media.
 
 
Qualifications
 
A successful applicant will have experience and training in Christian education, theology, ministry, education, or other related fields.  They will be familiar with basic Biblical knowledge, comfortable with progressive Christian theology and practice, and supportive of FCCW’s Open and Affirming statement.  They will be skilled in working with young people, parents, colleagues, and volunteers.  They will bring a positive attitude, an independent work ethic, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a desire to learn and grow.  They will communicate effectively through a variety of channels, including using social media to share information and build community.  They will have, or be willing to develop, knowledge of our community and relationships with relevant community leaders.
 
The Director of Family Ministries will report to the Pastor.  An annual review will be conducted to evaluate job performance and the working relationship and set goals for the coming year.
 
 
Hours and Compensation
 
This is a part-time position, approx. 20 hours per week, 43 weeks per year (mid-August through mid-June).  Specific schedule will be negotiated with the Pastor.  Sunday mornings are required.  Salary will be commensurate with experience.  Some funds for professional development are available.
