Annual Meeting Delegates Call For Racial Justice Training Requirement for Clergy

Delegates to the 212th Annual Meeting of the Rhode Island Conference of the United Church of Christ called on the Conference to require all Authorized Ministers to participate in, at minimum, a one-day workshop n racism and racial justice every three years and to require every candidate for ordination to also take part in such training.
The resolution also calls for expanded racial justice training for Christian Educators, youth leaders, music directors, organists, choir directors and other lay leaders, and asks that more anti-racism resources be made available.
The resolution passed at the Rhode Island Conference plenary held as part of the joint Annual Meeting in Springfield, MA, on June 16. The Connecticut Conference, meeting at the same time, passed a similar resolution.
At the plenary sessions, delegates also voted overwhelmingly in favor of joining with the Connecticut and Massachusetts conferences to form a new, unified Conference. Read more here. They also elected representatives to the new conference's Board of Directors (see the slate here.)
Delegates also heard a financial report, held a service of release for retiring Interim Conference Minister The Rev. Barbara Libby, and welcomed incoming Transitional Conference Minister Marilyn Kendrix.
